The awards season begins with a bang for two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, who stands alone as the only Black actor up for a Golden Globe this year. His terrific turn as 1970s drug kingpin Frank Lucas in "American Gangster" earned him a best actor nod, positioning him quite nicely for the Oscars. He’s got some stiff competition, though. Consider George Clooney ("Michael Clayton"), Daniel Day-Lewis ("There Will Be Blood"), Viggo Mortensen ("Eastern Promises") and James McAvoy ("Atonement"), all in the Best Dramatic Film Actor category.
Washington's star power is also evident in the Best Film category. Both "American Gangster" and the Oprah Winfrey-produced "The Great Debaters," in which Washington directs and also stars, will battle for top drama picture, competing with "Atonement," "Eastern Promises," "Michael Clayton," "No Country for Old Men," and "There Will Be Blood."
